Transplanted hair sheds within the first month — this is expected, happens to nearly everyone, and nothing has been lost. The follicle stays intact beneath the surface. New growth appears between months three and six, becomes clearly visible at six to nine months, and continues maturing through the first year. Some crown cases keep improving to 18 months.

Possibly. Under 25, hair loss patterns usually haven’t stabilized enough to plan around, and building a hairline for a pattern that’s still moving can leave you with an island of transplanted hair and continued thinning behind it. In that case we’ll typically recommend FDA-approved medical management first and revisit surgery once the picture is clear. There’s no upper age limit — donor quality and general health matter more than the number.

The procedure is performed under local anesthetic, so you shouldn’t feel pain during it. Expect mild soreness and tightness for a few days afterward, managed with prescribed medication.
